Carolina Larriera and Sergio Vieira de Mello visited King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia (1922-2012) and his wife Queen Monineath at the Royal Palace at Phnom Penh in 2002: Sergio had forged a lasting friendship from the days in Cambodia. They had maintained their friendship throughout the years. Sergio introduced Carolina Larriera as his fiancee, and invited him to their wedding at the end of that year. King Sihanouk proceeded to condecorate Sergio as Grand Chevalier of the Kingdom of Cambodia, as is shown in the images. King Sihanouk was really fond of Sergio, and wrote one of the most moving condolences letters the family ever received.
